Week 8 Editor’s Picks: Alabama to Get 9th Straight Win vs. Tennessee

John Rivera/Icon Sportswire

It wasn’t easy, but we came out of Week 7 alive… barely.

Today’s U Assistant Managing Editor Adam Biggers (@AdamBiggers81) and a featured guest will be providing their weekly Top 25 picks, testing their knowledge by contesting me (@Tyler_Waddell) for bragging rights (and maybe a gratifying pat on the back) at the end of the season.

With us this week is FanDuel Insider Jessica Kleinschmidt. It was by far the most difficult week of the season, as editors went a horrific 32-19 in Week 7. However, Week 8 looks much more manageable, as there is only one matchup between two Top 25 teams, compared to five in total last week.

Let’s get to pickin’.

AlabamaTennessee (3-3) at 8 Alabama (6-1)—TU Game of the Week

Tyler Waddell: Tennessee might be progressing under Butch Jones, and its three losses of a combined 12 points is a testament to how close the program is to a major breakthrough. But Nick Saban quickly has Alabama back to playing at a title-contending level again, and a powerful running game led by an outstanding offensive line and that other Heisman-worthy running back from the SEC West (along with a balanced passing attack from an improving Jake Coker) will be too much for the Vols’ defense and will lead to a ninth straight Crimson Tide win in a rivalry that will continue to be one sided.

Adam Biggers: Alabama has bounced back from its 43-37 Week 3 loss to Ole Miss. As a matter of fact, the No. 8-ranked Tide appear to be getting stronger each week. A pair of wins over top-1o ranked teams — 38-10 vs. then-No. 8 Georgia and 42-13 over then-No. 9 Texas A&M — certainly bodes well for Nick Saban, who hosts a Tennessee team that seems to find ways to lose. The Vols are 3-3, and each of those three losses were by seven or fewer points. That type of play won’t beat Alabama, so look for quarterback Jake Coker to effectively manage what should be a decisive win in Tuscaloosa.

Jessica Kleinschmidt: Alabama has defeated two Top 10 teams on the road this season, and that easily builds confidence. Still, what the Tide have to worry about when they face the Volunteers Saturday is their defense. They had three interception returns for touchdowns against Texas A&M last week. In addition to the intense feelings this team has for the Vols (ahem #TennesseeHateWeek), Alabama has managed to shutout a team this season. And while Alabama is set on not concentrating on being “No. 1 or No. 2,” there’s something to be said about a team who has been ranked at that number one spot at least once a season. Alabama will take this win.
