Virginia Tech, AD Whit Babcock agree to extension

Virginia Tech’s athletic director for the past three years, Whit Babcock is now in position to become the Hokies’ long-term leader after he and the school agreed in principle on a contract extension.

This agreement runs through June of 2024, putting the current Virginia Tech operations boss in place for a lengthy tenure in Blacksburg, Va. It at least gives Babcock security over the next several years after he’d spent the previous part of the decade at multiple other institutions.

Babcock came to Virginia Tech in 2014 after a two-plus-year stay as Cincinnati’s AD. This followed a five-year stop at the University of Missouri, where he served as executive associate AD. Babcock’s tenure has been associated with change in the school’s top two revenue-generating sports, with the newly extended AD having to replace Frank Beamer and find a new leader for the floundering Hokies’ men’s basketball program.

Babcock hired Justin Fuente to replace Beamer, who had been in his position since the 1980s but retired following the 2015 season. The former Memphis coach has ACC Coastal Division-leading Virginia Tech ranked 21st in the nation. The Hokie AD also made an impact hire for a men’s hoops program that has been a non-factor in the 21st century — and mostly since the ’80s. Former Marquette coach Buzz Williams elevated a team that had won nine games in the season prior to his 2014 arrival to one that won 20 last season.

Kenny Brooks will now coach the women’s basketball program after being hired in March as well, so Babcock’s tenure has overseen change at the top three head-coaching positions on campus. How these men lead their respective teams will go a long way toward judging the AD’s tenure in Blacksburg, Babcock’s fundraising and other financial accomplishments notwithstanding.
