Every year, the number of underclassmen who declare for the draft seems to grow. The lure of a paycheck and risk of injury and subsequent loss of draft value often outweighs any school pride or reason to return. But declaring early isn’t always a surefire way to superstardom.
Whether it’s because of bad advice from agents, poor workouts or limited college production, many junior prospects end up entering the draft and either become late-round picks or go undrafted entirely. And while this year’s crop of SEC stars who left school early features big names like Dante Fowler Jr., Sammie Coates and Todd Gurley, there are also quite a few who chose to forego the draft and return for their senior season.
