SEC Coaching Rankings: No. 8 Kevin Sumlin

With the SEC season less than four months away, here’s a look at how the conference’s coaches rank in 2015.

Bio: Kevin Sumlin served as an assistant for several big programs before landing his first head coaching job at Houston. He went 35-17 (24-8 C-USA) and made a bowl appearance in three of his four seasons with the Cougars.

Sumlin earned two C-USA titles during his tenure at Houston (2009, 2011) before being named head coach at Texas A&M. The Aggies finished 11-2 (6-2) overall and second in the SEC West in his debut season, which earned him SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Reason For Ranking: Sumlin’s stock has dropped since the departure of Johnny Manziel. The coach had a “once in a lifetime” talent that was capable of leading an underdog Aggies team through a surprise SEC debut season.

Since 2012, Sumlin’s teams have won less games than the previous season, finishing 9-4 (4-4 SEC) in 2013 and 8-5 (3-5) in 2014. The coach must prove his consistency in order to once again rank among the conference’s top coaches.

2015 Outlook: Texas A&M hired revered defensive coordinator John Chavis this offseason after ranking as the SEC’s worst defense. Sumlin has always worked as an offensive specialist, despite playing linebacker in college.

The combination should help the Aggies improve in 2015. However, a tough schedule could keep the team in the middle of the SEC standings.

Texas A&M signed several top-10 classes during Sumlin’s tenure and the coach will field a talented lineup. The Aggies should continue to be competitive and could be a contender by season’s end. If so, Sumlin’s stock will raise back to the upper echelon of SEC coaches.
