The Fresno State Bulldogs have relieved Tim DeRuyter of his head coaching duties, according to multiple reports from Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs are 1-7 this season with their only win coming against a FCS opponent in Sacramento State back in Week 2. The program has lost six consecutive games, including blowout losses to Nebraska, Toledo and UNLV.

DeRuyter was hired in 2012 after serving as defensive coordinator and interim head coach for the Texas A&M Aggies. Fresno State went 9-4 and 11-2 in his first two seasons, respectively, but lost in both the Hawaii Bowl and Las Vegas Bowl. Still, Fresno State gave DeRuyter a lucrative extension, paying him around $1.5 million per season.

Things have fallen off hard since then, however. His team went 3-9 last season, which initially placed him on the hot seat. He will finish his tenure at the school with an even 30-30 record with a total of three bowl losses.

DeRuyter may be an attractive option as a defensive coordinator for a major program. He turned around the defense at Nevada when he started coaching, moving them from 99th in the nation to 22nd in 2002. He has similarly turned around the defense at Ohio, Air Force and Texas A&M along the way.

DeRuyter will be owed more than $3.44 million as part of his buyout. Should he get a new job, part of that will be offset accounting for a contract he signs somewhere else.

Meanwhile, Fresno State, with zero bowl wins since 2007, still offers a good place in the Mountain West Conference for a new head coach. There will a press conference at 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday to formally discuss the future of the team.
