Podcast: CBB Discussion with Sporting News’ Mike DeCourcy

On Friday, the Sports in the Mitten podcast caught up with Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News to discuss the upcoming season–the season being that of preseason top 25 polls, not necessarily the start of college basketball.

We’re still in the middle of college football, but basketball practices have started across the country and a lot of people are starting to get excited about the upcoming year. DeCourcy and the Sporting News staff tabbed the Kansas Jayhawks as the No. 1-ranked team of the preseason, while myself and four other Today’s U writers bestowed that honor upon the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Purdue Boilermakers might be a team worth your attention, and be sure to keep an eye out for their star freshman big man, 5-star power forward Caleb Swanigan–who infamously decommitted from Michigan State after coach Tom Izzo failed to meet a couple of requests.

At 6’9″ and 245 pounds, Swanigan could certainly power the Boilers toward March Madness.

The Maryland Terrapins, TU’s No. 2-ranked team, will trot out sophomore guard Melo Trimble and 5-star freshman center Diamond Stone very soon. Plus there’s Jake Layman and Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon to consider. Everyone likes the Terps. They’re going to challenge for a Big Ten title.

DeCourcy goes in-depth during a 20-minute-ish interview. If you haven’t already thought about college hoops, now is the time. So click the link above and listen away as DeCourcy shares his thoughts on (some of) what to expect in 2015-16.

The Today’s U CBB Preseason Top 25 rolls out next week. Who’s your No. 1-ranked team? Let us know in the comments section.
