G’Day Mate! How about a game of football (a bowl game no less) down under? Well, if the Pac-12, Mountain West Conference and the CEO of Melbourne Stadiums Limited have their way, that may come to fruition in 2016.
Paul Sergeant, said CEO, and a group of organizers from Australia want a bowl game to be played in Melbourne next year. With the NCAA approving the addition of three more bowls earlier this week, why not another?
The game would be played at Etihad Stadium and would pit teams from the Pac-12 and the MWC against one another.
More from Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com:
“If it was up to us, we’re good to go for 2016,” Sergeant told ESPN.com. “But there are many other moving parts involved. From our perspective we are 100 percent (committed), but we’re only one player in it.”
Sergeant was part of a four-man contingent that traveled to Phoenix and met with Pac-12, Mountain West and various college football officials the past couple of days.
“The necessities for a bowl game seem to be in place (there), including a solid management team,” Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said. “A stadium, local support and an appetite for college football.”
For the last five months the two conferences have been having discussions of having this take pace. It’s to be determined exactly which schools would represent their respective conferences in this proposed bowl game.
