Oklahoma suspends Joe Mixon for Iowa State game

Oklahoma will be without standout sophomore running back Joe Mixon due to what the team is calling a violation of team rules. The program suspended Mixon for Thursday night’s game against Iowa State.

In a rare bit of clarity on a team-imposed suspension, the university’s announcement points to the ball-carrier having issues with parking tickets.

“I regret that I did not respond appropriately to parking attendants and understand and accept the consequences,” Mixon said in a brief statement.

Bob Stoops added: “OU sets very high standards and they must be met by all of our student-athletes.”

This puts a stop to Mixon’s successful second slate in Norman, Okla. The third-year sophomore has shined in Samaje Perine’s absence as the Sooners’ No. 1 running back. Through eight games, Mixon is nearly at 1,200 yards from scrimmage, having rushed for 813 and having caught 24 passes for 357 yards. Scoring nine touchdowns, the polarizing talent has become Oklahoma’s second-most dangerous weapon behind wideout Dade Westbrook (11 receiving TDs).

Of course, Mixon is polarizing because of a 2014 incident that left a woman with major facial injuries. He did not play for Oklahoma that season due to a suspension but has somewhat controversially re-emerged as a key performer for the Sooners, who enter Thursday’s Big 12 clash at 6-2.

Additionally, Perine is questionable for the midweek tilt with a pulled muscle in his leg that’s kept him out of two games. Stoops said earlier this week he doesn’t expect Perine to play against the Cyclones, somehow leaving a walk-on, Devin Montgomery, as the next man up at the position. Rodney Anderson’s season-ending injury and Daniel Brooks giving up football earlier this season created this depleted scenario.

Montgomery carried five times for 16 yards in Oklahoma’s blowout of Kansas last week.
