You might as well start referring to the Northern Iowa Panthers as the Northern Iowa “Giant Killers”, because this is a team that obviously has no problem defeating supposed superior competition.
Just a few weeks after toppling then No. 1 North Carolina, UNI once again beat a Top 5 team on Saturday night by disposing of the in-state Iowa State Cyclones, 81-79, en route to another upset win.
Senior guard Wes Washpun once again led the Panthers to victory with a career-high 28 points and 11 assists.
He went 9-of-14 from the field, 2-of-4 from downtown and 8-of-10 from the line in the victorious effort. On a night that already saw one triple-double (from Michigan’s Derrick Walton Jr.), Washpun was just three rebounds away from notching one of his own. He finished the game with seven rebounds, also adding in two steals.
In the upset against North Carolina in late November, Washpun put up 21 points and eight assists.

Iowa State came into this contest undefeated and now looks ahead to what could end up being a tough matchup against No. 23 Cincinnati.
