North Carolina State gained a significant transfer Monday when 2014-15 Conference USA Freshman of the Year Torin Dorn decided to transfer from Charlotte to the Wolfpack. Dorn opted to transfer after Alan Major stepped down as coach of the 49ers after this past season.
The 6’4” guard will have to sit out next season as per transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility remaining starting in the 2016-17 season.
More from Joe Giglio of The Charlotte Observer:
“They have a reputation for developing guys that transfer,” Dorn said.
N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried has made four straight NCAA tournament appearances with the help of transfer guards Alex Johnson (Cal State Bakersfield), Ralston Turner (LSU) and Trevor Lacey (Alabama). Terry Henderson (West Virginia) sat out last season under NCAA rules and is expected to be one of the main scorers for Gottfried’s team next season.
“I pride myself as a finisher and my mid-range game is polished,” Dorn said. “But I want to improve my range.”
Dorn is coming off a season with the 49ers in which he averaged 12 points (which led the team), 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He also shot .505 percent from the field, .656 percent from the free-throw line and .342 percent from three-point range.
