NCAA Football Bowl Game in Australia Could Sell Out

Are you ready for some football….down under? That possibility could become a reality fairly soon.

Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia is pushing to have an American college football bowl game played inside its facilities. The CEO of the 40,000-seat capacity stadium believes that a game in Australia would not only be successful, it would sell out.

“We expect it to be the hottest ticket in town. There’s no reason it shouldn’t sell out,” Paul Sergeant told Fox Sports Australia.

With the cricket season in full swing by the time bowl season rolls around, it may be hard to pry fans away from those games to watch two colleges from far away battle it out on the gridiron. However, it appears this event will happen — not if, but when.

“Nothing is ever guaranteed until its signed,” Sergeant said. “We are well down the path. We’ve been to the States twice. We’ve met them in Dallas, met them in Phoenix, and people have been over here. We’ve been working on this now for a year and a half.

“We’d like to think we’ll get there in the next six to eight weeks.”

Sergent wants this to be a multi-year staple, not a once in a lifetime event.

“This has really put us in the shop window of American sport and not just as a venue, but Melbourne as a city, and Australia as a country.

“The fantastic facilities we have to offer, they are world class, and people will go away with that feedback and start to spread that word.”
