After Kentucky fell in its game at UCLA last week, the undefeated Michigan State Spartans (9-0) are your newest team atop this week’s Associated Press rankings. The Spartans, led by the dynamic Denzel Valentine, received 62 of 65 first-place votes. This is the first time Michigan State has been ranked No. 1 in two years.

With its loss to the Bruins, Kentucky (7-1) fell to No. 5 in the poll. Kansas (6-1) with stud freshman Cheick Diallo now in the fold have risen to No. 2 in the rankings. North Carolina, which was boosted by the return of Marcus Paige, had a huge win over Maryland (who is now No. 7 in the rankings) last week to come in at No. 3. Unbeaten Iowa State (6-0) now ranks fourth in the poll.
The rest of the top ten has Oklahoma (5-0) at No.7, Duke (8-1) at No.8, Villanova (7-0) at No.9 and Virginia (7-1) at No. 10. Appropriately enough, Oklahoma and Villanova are playing each other on Monday night and the winner of that game could see a big climb up these rankings come next week.

New to the top-25 are Butler (who come in at No.18) and Utah (who come in at No. 25). Those clubs are new to this week’s top-25, but both have polled in the AP top-25 previously this season. Dropping from the rankings were Syracuse and Texas A&M.
