With Mike White departing for Florida, Louisiana Tech has tabbed Miami (Florida) assistant Eric Konkol as their new basketball coach. Louisiana Tech made the hiring official on Monday.
Konkol is a well-traveled man, as he has been an assistant for 15 years at five different schools as well as a stint in high school. He was Jim Larranaga’s right hand man, and was with him at both George Mason and Miami from 2007-2015.
More from the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com):
Louisiana Tech athletic director Tommy McClelland says Konkol “has a national reputation as a great recruiter” and is a rising star in coaching.
The 38-year-old Konkol begins his first Division I head coaching job after spending the past four seasons on Jim Larranaga’s Hurricanes staff. Konkol also coached under Larranaga at George Mason.
Konkol says “a standard of excellence is growing” at Louisiana Tech and he intends to build on that.
The Bulldogs were building some momentum under White, as he took them to three straight NIT’s while compiling a 101-40 record at the school. Konkol has also previously coached at Tulsa, Tennessee (Georgia), and North Dakota State.
Last season, the Bulldogs went 27-9 and finished in first place in Conference USA with a 15-3 record in conference play.
