So long from Madison Square Garden folks! I’ll be back for the championship game tomorrow night (Saturday) between the favorites, the No.1 seeded Villanova Wildcats, and the upset-minded No. 6 seeded Xavier Musketeers. It’s been fun!

Final Score: Xavier 65 Georgetown 63

Xavier fouls both times Georgetown had ball down three points and it worked for Chris Mack and the Musketeers, as they showed enough grit down the stretch to eek out this game. Give it up to Xavier, who upset both Butler and Georgetown (for the third time this season no less) and will now go on to play Villanova in the Big East Championship Saturday night. While it wasn’t pretty, it was a fantastic finish for a game the Musketeers were up 53-33 midway through the second half.

Final Stats:

Xavier shoots 47.6 from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 61.3 from the free-throw line. Matt Stainbrook comes up huge with 20 points and nine rebounds (both team highs).  Xavier also wins the battle of the boards, 33-28.

For Georgetown, the Hoyas shot 40 percent from the floor, 26.3 from three-point range and 81.8 from the free-throw line.

Dee Davis nails down both crucial ft’s. Mack calls timeout and the Hoyas have one shot. Will Xavier foul to avoid a Hoyas’ three-point attempt. 10.3 secs to go.

Smith-Rivera takes it strong to the hoop and closes gap to one. 14.7 seconds left and Xavier is hanging on by a thread, 60-59.  We’ll see if the Musketeers can connect at the line and how they defend the Hoyas after foul shots.

Xavier can’t lock down game. Myles Davis makes one of two FT’s.

What an unexpected finish at the Garden. The Hoyas won’t quit. Dee Davis misses two FT’s and Paul White next time down court nails three to bring Hoyas within 59-57 with 23 seconds left.

JTIII calls a timeout. Suffice to say, the Hoyas need a basket here with just 52.5 second left and down five.

Stainbrook draws critical fourth foul. Hopkins D’s up Stainbrook hard and forces turnover. Hoyas ball down five with just 2:02 to go.

Last media timeout and the score is 57-5o Xavier with 2:55 to go. After timeout Bluiett hits crucial three. Then Copeland hits soft jumper. Musketeers then turn ball over and the Hoyas will have the ball after the break.

What a tremendous show of resiliency by the Hoyas. They have come back to cut lead to 54-48 with 4:08 to go. Isaac Copeland with big three to draw them closer. Big East Tournament at it’s best. And that’s an understatement.

Wow, the Hoyas still have some bite left and all of a sudden go on a 10-0 run and cut the lead to 53-43. Mack calls timeout and talks things over. Not over yet in the Garden. 5:58 to go in the game. Trawick having good game.

Xavier just owns Georgetown this year. If they hold on to win they would have won all three games. Otherwise, Georgetown would be 21-6. They have already combined to beat the Hoyas by 30 in the previous games. And as a result, the chipiness gets ugly as a lot of pushing and shoving (and almost punches) ensues.

Smith-Rivera with three to bring Hoyas within 16. Xavier leads 49-33 with 9:55 to go.

Georgetown getting a lot of ticky-tack calls being called. Xavier definitely being more assertive and aggressive tonight. Xavier leads 49-30 and are controlling game in every facet.

At the first media timeout in second half, Xavier has come out roaring after the gate and now lead 45-28 with 15:41 to play. Hoyas are playing with their heads down and are showing major frustration. Stainbrook has been a beast with 19 points and eight rebounds.

It looks like Macura is taped up and may give it a go.

Almost ready for the second half. We’ll see if Hoyas can make early statement coming out of the break.

Huge tip-in bucket by Stainbrook at the end of the half. At halftime, Xavier leads Georgetown 35 to 26. Musketeers are shooting .500 from the field, .500 from three-point range and 5-7 from the line. There is no understating how big Stainbrook as been tonight. He now has 14 points on the night to go with six rebounds.

Georgetown is shooting .455 from the field, o.143 from three-point range and shooting 5-6 from the charity stripe. Smith leads Hoyas with 10 points.

1:34 to go and Xavier is starting to gain control of the game and now lead 33-26 over Georgetown. The threes are starting to fall and Stainbrook has come to work with his hard hat on. His 12 points leads all scorers.

What a block by Hopkins! Stainbrook with a bucket next time down floor and Xavier is taking over now.

J.P. Macura injures ankle and is trying to walk it off but needs help and will go to bench for evaluation. Now he is being taken to the locker room.

7:30 to go in the half and Georgetown leads Xavier 22-19. The Musketeers are heating up from long distance, and have made three of their seven attempts. It’s also getting physical in the paint, as per usual. It should be noted that Xavier swept the season series, so the Hoyas are out for blood.

It’s the Stainbrook/Smith show so far.

Josh Smith is like a bulldozer going to the rim. Even Stainbrook couldn’t body him up.

Georgetown leads Xavier 16-11 with 11:06 to go. Hoyas shooting 67 percent from field, while the Musketeers are struggling, shooing 36 percent from the floor. Hoyas also controlling the glass, 7-3. Stainbrook looks like he’s ready to play tonight, though.

First media timeout and the score is 7-4 with Georgetown leading Xavier. Teams mostly playing physical in the paint with only two three-pointers attempted between both teams.

You gotta love it. The big guys Smith and Stainbrook going at each other. They both have four points apiece and are going “belly-to-belly”.

Here we go semifinal #2 between No.2 seed Georgetown and No. 6 seed Xavier!

Xavier starters: James Farr, Trevon Bluiett, Remy Abell, Dee Davis and Matt Stainbrook.
