Post-Game Quotes:

Xavier coach Chris Mack

“It seems like every time we play Butler over the last five or six years, they’re just gritty games. I thought our team responded with the resiliency that at times maybe we wouldn’t have had.”

“I’ve told these guys that everybody’s been talking about the Butler-Georgetown matchup in the semifinals and that was a little disrespectful because they have to play us first.

“Our guys are competitors. We felt like, if we played at our best, that we would advance. That’s exactly what we did. These guys played really tough.”

“We’ve got a quick turnaround to play one of the best teams in the country in Georgetown and it will be a challenge.”

Butler coach Chris Holtmann

“I think that we’ve got to give Xavier credit. They played physical, as we expected they would and I thought it was a  physical, hard played game by both teams.”

“We were hoping to be able to get to the free-throw line, be a little bit more efficient than what we were. That and our inability to take care of the ball at the level that we’ve done for most of the season, I think really affected us.”

That’s it folks. Your final score: Xavier wins 67-61 in overtime in our first “upset” of the day. As if they needed it, the Musketeers can rest assured they’ll be dancing. Xavier definitely played with a lot of heart and desire down the stretch.

Final stats: Xavier shoots .436 percent from the field, .333 percent from three-point range and .609 from the foul line. Butler shoots .393 from the field, .292 from three-point territory and .526 from the charity stripe. Alex Barlow is high scorer with 22 points.

Dunham addsed 17 points before fouling out. Chrabascz chips in 16 points for Bulldogs. The Musketeers, meanwhile, have five players in double figures. Dee Davis, Myles Davis and Matt Stainbrook each score 13. Jalen Reynolds adds in 12 points while Trevon Bluiett contributes 11.

Butler gets hoop from Chrabascz and cuts Xavier’s lead to 66-61 with 16.3 seconds to go.

Roosevelt Jones called for offensive foul. The Bulldogs are clearly on the ropes. Myles Davis to line for two FT’s. He Makes both.

Chris Holtmann calls timeout with 34.6 second left and Butler down 64-59. Suffice to say, Butler needs a hoop here.

Barlow misses three. Chrabascz grabs key rebound and makes one of two FT’s.

Xavier playing with heart and tenacity in overtime. Myles Davis with huge rebound and putback to give Musketeers five-point lead (63-58) with 1:03 to go. Butler can’t go to Dunham. Have to to go Barlow.

Ouch. Kellen Dunham fouls out in overtime with Xavier leading 60-58.

Overtime intensity is in hyperdrive at the Garden.

Jalen Reynolds with big bucket again, plus free throw. Xavier up 59-56 in overtime. Sitting next to Fox’s Tarik Turner and he said he ‘loves” Reynolds potential.

And of course overtime! It shouldn’t be any other way!

And here it goes. Xavier has ball with 16.9 seconds left in tie game. Winner gets Georgetown tomorrow night in the semis. Who will rise to occasion?

Final media timeout of the game and the game is all tied up at 53 with 1:24 to go. Trevon Bluiett nails key three to tie game. Roosevelt Jones then fouled by Stainbrook, will be going to the line for two FT’s. Easily best game of the tournament.

And down the stretch they come. Butler up 53-50 over Xavier with 2:53 to go.

It’s an all-out war here at MSG between two Big East teams that want to bolster their NCAA Tournament resumes. It couldn’t have been scripted any better. Only fitting .

It’s getting a little tight around the collar at MSG. Game is getting very physical and chippy. Butler’s Kelan Martin called for tech. Myles Davis then knocks down both free throws. Dunham then fouled on ensuing possession; makes both FT’s. Next is Dee Davis with the floater. Butler now leads 44-41 with 7:47 to go.

Jalen Reynolds with two impressive low-post moves. Cuts Butler’s nine point lead down to five. Butler up 42-37 with 12:05 to go in the game. Reynolds is another name to watch out for next year. Soph’s game is rapidly improving.

Stainbrook with big bucket underneath to stem the tide. Media timeout, Butler up 39-33 with 15:41 to go.

Butler on a nice run. Chris Mack calls timeout to try to stem the tide. Alex Barlow is having one heck of a night. Now has 16 points (4-7 from three-point line).

Xavier gets last second three-pointer from Dee Davis to take 30-28 lead into halftime. As expected its been an evenly-split half with the flow going back and fourth. Xavier shooting 462 from the field, .571 from three-point range and 2-3 from the foul line. Butler is shooting .440 percent from the field, .400 from three-point range and 2-6 from the foul line. Should be a great second half. This one is truly up for grabs!

With 2:10 to go before half, Butler leads 26-24 with Kellen Dunham going to line after the break to shoot three free-throws.  Game is tight with neither team getting a huge leg up. Barlow leads the Bulldogs with 11 points, while Stainbrook leads the Musketeers with six points.

Great back and fourth game here at the Garden. Xavier now leads 20-18 over Butler with 7:58 to go in the half. The Musketeers playing with a ton of emotion. They are now on a 18-6 run.

Xavier’s shots now fall as they work their way back into the game. Butler now leads Xavier 15-13 with 10:28 to go in first half. Butler shooting .429 percent from the field; Xavier is shooting .500 now. Butler leads on the board, 9-6. This is a good game of two evenly matched teams.

I like Jalen Reynolds of Xavier a lot. Very strong and maturing at great rate. Expect a breakout season net year.

First media timeout and Butler leads 10-2. Xavier having difficulty hitting shots, as they are 1-5 from the field whereas the Bulldogs are 4-9 from the field. Butler also leads on the boards, 7-2.

Butler starts off hot with two Alex Barlow threes, up 8-0 early.

Here we go. Starters for Butler: Alex Barlow, Kellen Dunham, Roosevelt Jones, Kameron Woods and Andrew Chrabascz. Starters for Xavier: Trevon Bluiett, Remy Abel, Dee Davis, Matt Stainbrook and J.P. Macura.
