Legendary Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan Officially Retires

We knew it was eventually coming and coming soon, but this soon? Outside of those on the inside of the process, perhaps nobody saw Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan announcing his retirement on Tuesday night.

All you had to do was check Twitter, though, because Ryan’s retirement became the sports news of the day. According to multiple reports, Ryan is “hanging ’em up”, and he did so via a post-game press conference.

Wisconsin associate head coach Greg Gard will take over the program as the interim head coach, according to the Wisconsin press release, and Ryan’s retirement will be effective immediately.

“After months of conversation with Barry Alvarez and his administrative staff, as well as my wife, Kelly, I have decided that now is the right time to step down from the head coaching position here at Wisconsin,” Ryan said via the release.”This was a decision months in the making. I brought this up to Barry back in April. He advised me to take some time to think it over and I appreciated that. But in recent weeks, I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to retire and for Greg Gard to have the opportunity to coach the team for the remainder of the season. I discussed this with Barry and I appreciate him giving me the space to make this decision.”

Ryan will without a doubt go down as one of the best coaches in Wisconsin sports history and likely in NCAA history as well. In fact, Ryan being an all-time great NCAA coach is hard to deny.

The past two seasons saw Ryan lead the Badgers to two final fours, including a berth in the national championship game last year against Duke. He won seven Big Ten titles with Wisconsin and took the Badgers to 14-straight NCAA Tournaments.

He’ll go down with a 364-130 win-loss record with the Badgers and his career as a coach saw him notch 747 all-time wins. Compare that to only 233 losses, and that shows you just how good Ryan has been.

Happy trails, coach.
