LEXINGTON, Ky. –Wenyen Gabriel is one of the top college basketball recruits in the nation, so naturally he committed to Kentucky.
Gabriel, who’s 6-foot-9, 210 pounds, is ranked as the No. 4 power forward in the nation, according to the recruiting industry generated 247Sports Composite, and he’s the 23rd overall player in the ESPN 100.
Speaking of ESPN, Gabriel announced his commitment on ESPN’s Recruiting Nation, which you can watch here.
“I really like Kentucky because of how (John) Calipari was recruiting me. He took the recruitment into his own hands from Day 1,” Gabriel told host Adam Finkelstein. “I talked to his assistants a little bit. I mean, even the day before he got inducted into the hall of fame, we had sat down for breakfast that day. His approach has always been the same to me. He’s really excited about me and I feel exactly the same way.”

Duke, Maryland, UConn and Providence were also in the running for the 5-star’s commitment.
Gabriel joins a Kentucky recruiting class that features another 5-star power forward in Sacha Killeya-Jones, but the newest Wildcats’ commitment doesn’t seem to worried about there being a crowd in the front court.
He spoke with ESPN Recruiting Nation about his ability to be versatile and play on the wing and guard any position, and when you watch his highlights it’s easy to see what he’s talking about.
Gabriel is long and athletic. He can finish strong at the rim and be a factor in transition running the floor, but he also has a smooth outside shot so he’ll be able to be a mismatch for Kentucky as well.
