Jalen Hurd explains decision to transfer from Tennessee

Tennessee Volunteers junior running back Jalen Hurd announced last week that he would be transferring from the University, effective immediately. He took to Twitter on Sunday night to clarify his rationale for doing so, citing a desire to want to help turn the program around and not feeling that the scheme properly fit his skill set.

“Coming to Tennessee, I understood the read option offense may not be the best fit for me,” writes the 6-foot-4 240-pound Hurd, “But I put that aside for my love of Tennessee and wanting to be a part of a beloved program.” Ranked by 247sports as a five-star recruit coming out of Hendersonville, Tennessee, the site’s No. 1 ranked player in the state of Tennessee, Hurd chose to stay in-state and become a Volunteer despite offers from many others big-time programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, LSU, and Notre Dame.

He rushed for nearly 900 yards as a freshman, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark when factoring in his receiving contributions, and found the end zone on seven separate occasions. He would have a breakout campaign last year for Tennessee, gaining 1,288 yards on the ground for 12 touchdowns, as well as two more through the passing game.

To start the 2016 season, Hurd gained 435 yards on the ground and made only 10 catches through the front six games of the season. Coming off an Outback Bowl MVP performance last season, Hurd clarified, “This did have a factor in my decision as I want to play in an offensive scheme that highlights my abilities to run but also expands to allow me to show my abilities to catch the ball and be a mismatch for defenses.”
