Florida Southern took down Indiana University of Pennsylvania 77-62 Saturday to win the Division II men’s basketball national championship at the Ford Center in Evansville, Illinois. The Moccasins, winners of the Sunshine State Conference, jumped out to a lead early in the contest and never looked back.
The Crimson Hawks came up just short of the title after winning the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference and advancing to the national title game with wins over Azusa Pacific and Tarleton State. IUP finished the season with a 31-7 record overall.
Florida Southern was lead by guard Kevin Capers, who scored 24 points on 8-13 shooting in the win. The Mocs, who run a fast-paced offense and typically shoot within the first ten seconds of the shot clock, ran past Southern New Hampshire and Bellarmine to reach the title game. They shot 51 percent from the floor and hit 13 three pointers to bring the championship trophy back to Lakeland, Florida.
