You know you’ve got a big game on your hands when ESPN’s College Gameday comes into town, and this weekend’s clash between Temple and Notre Dame certainly qualifies.
Looking back, who would have thought that Temple would be one of the most talked about schools in the nation? Who would have thought that the Owls home-game against the Fighting Irish—ranked No. 11 in the preseason, mind you—would be anything but a blow out?
What looked like a game you could have done without watching (at least when looking at the schedule before the season) has turned into a nationally-ranked much-watch game, though, and all the credit in the world has to go to Temple for that.
Heading into this season we knew Notre Dame would be good. So far, the Fighting Irish’s 6-1 record and No. 9 national ranking would back that point up.
How many saw the Templ Owls going 7-0 through their schedule and heading into this game with a national ranking, though? Temple has beaten the likes of Penn State, Cincinnati, UCF and ECU to get to this point, and boast a No. 21 AP Top 25 ranking as a result.
This weekend’s home clash against Notre Dame is easily the biggest game of Temple’s season, and it’s going to go a long way toward determining whether or not the Owls are truly a team that deserves some major national respect as far as the rankings are concerned.
Despite a few other big-time matchups on the schedule for Week 9—Ole Miss at Auburn, Florida at Georgia, Maryland at Iowa (ranked No. 10 and undefeated, remember)—College Gameday has decided that this matchup, and the atmosphere at Temple, is the one they want to show off this Saturday on national telivision. All things considered, it’s hard to blame them.
