The letters to players, each with a check enclosed, said every person was important and special to him and to “enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.” Smith’s trust sent about 180 letters out, totalling $36,000 gifted.
His teams won two national championships and reached eleven Final Fours. Smith was the first coach in North Carolina to offer collegiate scholarships to black athletes and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
