It was announced late-Monday night that Auburn has dismissed talented wide receiver D’haquille “Duke” Williams for failing to live up to expectations of the program. Auburn’s athletic site AuburnTigers.com issued a release confirming the news.
“When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences,” head coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement. “I gave D’haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out.”
After Williams was suspended for last season’s Outback Bowl against Wisconsin, he was on a zero-tolerance watch.
Williams, a 6’2”, 224-pound senior from Laplace, Louisiana, was third on the Tigers in receiving this year. He had registered 12 catches for 147 yards and one touchdown this season. Williams, a preseason SEC All-American and potential NFL draft pick, is coming off a season in which he recorded 45 receptions for 730 yards and five touchdowns.
Auburn is idle this weekend, but will be back in action next Thursday when it travels to Kentucky on October 15.
