As expected, class of 2017 five-star power forward P.J. Washington committed to Kentucky on Thursday.

After Wildcats’ head coach John Calipari secured the services of five-star center Nick Richards earlier in the day, Washington was the second stud recruit to pledge to play for Kentucky.

Washington went on ESPNU’s Recruiting Nation show and let the world know he was going to be a Wildcat.

Evan Daniels of Scout.com had this to say about Washington (via Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald Leader):

“I think PJ is one of the best rebounders in the country,” Daniels said. “And he’s one of the most versatile forwards, in terms of what he can do offensively. He can score with his back to the rim. He can score attacking from the high post. He can make mid- to long-range jump shots. … He has a 7-2 wingspan, so he’s got great length. There’s a lot to like about him as a prospect.”

Washington, a 6’8”, 229-pound power forward from Dallas, Texas (Findlay Prep) is rated as a five-star recruit according to 247Sports. The site ranks him as the No. 15 overall prospect in the 2017 class and the sixth-best power forward in the country. 247Sports also regards Washington as the best basketball player in the state of Texas.

He chose the Wildcats over other finalists North Carolina and UNLV. Washington also possessed offers from Arizona, Alabama, Baylor, California, Connecticut. Florida, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Texas, Texas A&M and UCLA. Michigan was also showing interest in Washington.

Calipari’s 2017 recruiting class of Washington and Richards now ranks as the 22nd-best in the country according to 247Sports and sixth-best among SEC teams.
