Alabama head basketball coach Avery Johnson has got to be pinching himself, as on Thursday he landed yet another top recruit.

With National Signing week commencing, there have been a bevy of commitments of late, with the SEC being the prime beneficiary.

After Johnson secured the services of five-star point guard Collin Sexton earlier in the day, Johnson received more great news Thursday night when class of 2017 four-star shooting guard, and Alabama native, John Petty offered up a verbal pledge to play for the Crimson Tide.

Petty spoke with Daniel Boyette of AL.com about his decision to play for Johnson and the Crimson Tide:

“I was the first person he talked to when he got the job,” Petty said of Jonson. “That meant a lot to me.”

“It’s going to be great. From my understanding, we’re going to have the No. 1 recruiting class. We’re ready to get in there and work.”

Petty, a 6’5”, 180-pound shooting guard from Huntsville, Alabama (Jemison High School) is rated as a four-star recruit according to 247Sports. The site ranks him as the No. 31 overall prospect in the 2017 class and the fifth-best shooting guard in the country. 247Sports also regards Petty as the second-best basketball player in the state of Alabama.

He chose the Crimson Tide over serious interest from Kentucky. Petty also had offers from Auburn, Connecticut, Kansas, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Florida State.

247Sports now ranks Alabama’s class as the third-best in the country and tops among SEC teams.
