Per various reports, Dan Mullen and Mississippi State received some great news Wednesday, as it was learned class of 2016 four-star defensive end Emmit Gooden made a verbal pledge to play for the Bulldogs. Gooden is a significant recruit for Mississippi State as he is the first four-star recruit to sign up for Mullen’s 2016 recruiting class.

He made his announcement Thursday night during the HHS Fall Sports Banquet. Gooden is the younger brother of former Mississippi State basketball star Jarvis Varnado.
Gooden, a 6’4”, 280-pound strong-side defensive end from Brownsville, Tennessee (Haywood High School), is rated as a four-star recruit according to 247 Sports. The site ranks Gooden as the No. 311 overall player in the 2016 class and the 13th-best strong-side defensive end in the country. 247 Sports also ranks Gooden as the seventh-best football player in the state of Tennessee.
He chose the Bulldogs over strong interest from Alabama, LSU and Tennessee. Gooden also had offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State and Texas A&M. He was also receiving interest from Memphis, Nebraska, North Carolina, UCLA and Vanderbilt.
Gooden is the 15th commitment of Mullen’s 2016 recruiting class, a class that 247 Sports currently ranks as the 50th best in the country.
