Following the somewhat surprising announcement of Mississippi State’s decision to fire head basketball coach Rick Ray after a disappointing 13-19 season, 2016 Bulldogs commit D’Marcus Simonds has officially reopened his recruitment. Simonds informed The Clarion Ledger of his decision this morning before officially making the announcement via Twitter:
Simonds told The Clarion Ledger via text message: “I committed because of coach Ray and They dismiss him after giving him a job in a program that was sub par at the time … It’s crazy to me. And they did it the year before he was about to get his real recruits. It’s crazy to me.”
Simonds, a consensus top 60 junior, was Mississippi State’s top recruit for the 2016 class. Simonds also holds offers from Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and UCONN.
Fellow 2016 Mississippi State commit Darius Hicks, a 3-star commit out of Quitmas, Mississippi who also holds offers from Ole Miss, Alabama, and Florida State, told the Clarion Ledger that he is unsure whether or not he will also reopen his recruitment: “It really hasn’t set in yet, I was committed to Coach Ray not just Mississippi State, but that plays a big part in it.”
2015 4-Star commit Quinndary Weatherspoon is also considering reopening his commitment: “I was shocked when I got the news because I was really coming to play for Rick Ray and not just because of Mississippi State … I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
