Spears is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and is ranked as the No. 73 inside backer in the 2016 class, according to the industry generated 247Sports Composite Rankings. He’s also the No. 202 ranked player from the state of Texas—which may not seem extremely impressive at first— but when you realize the amount elite high school football recruits that come out of the Longhorn state on a daily basis; the fact that he’s ranked at all says something about what Spears is bringing to the table for the Mustangs.
Head coach Chad Morris and his staff are quietly building a very good class down in Dallas. With the addition of Spears, SMU now has 22 2016 commitments, and the Mustangs are ranked within the Top 60 classes in the nation.
According to the 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings, Morris’ class checks in at No. 57 nationally. Perhaps more importantly, though, is what SMU is doing within the conference, and that’s what’s really impressive about this class. Behind only Houston, who boasts 5-star defensive tackle Ed Walker as part of its class, SMU checks in with the No. 2 ranked 2016 recruiting class in the AAC.
