West Virginia’s run as one of two unbeaten teams in the Big 12 finally came to an end on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers’ perfect season was stunned in convincing fashion by the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater in a game that could end any chance of a Big 12 appearance in the College Football Playoff.

After a 6-0 start to the season, the Mountaineers faced their toughest road test of the season and couldn’t live up to the task against the Cowboys. Oklahoma State led for much of the game and never looked back from a 20-10 halftime lead to get the job done against the 10th-ranked Mountaineers to score the upset at home over a top 25 program.

Turnovers were a big factor in West Virginia’s first loss of the season. Oklahoma State’s 17 points off of turnovers ended up as the difference in the final score as head coach Mike Gundy’s team certainly benefited from the turnover battle in the 37-20 victory..

Cowboys’ quarterback Mason Rudolph was phenomenal in the win. The junior threw for three touchdowns on the day and his 26-of-36 passing for 273 yards led the way.

West Virgina was hurt by a first half injury to running back Rushel Shell after the team ruled out the senior back at halftime. Kennedy McKoy and Justin Crawford were unable to fill the absence of Shell enough to mount a comeback over the final two quarters. Both backups failed to reach the 100-yard mark, and as a result, the Mountaineers only scored 10 points in the second half without Shell on the field.
