USC head football coach Clay Helton has suspended sophomore linebacker Osa Masina for a violation of teams rules and Masina will not travel to Texas for the Trojans’ season opener against Alabama on Saturday.

Helton refused to address why Masina was suspended when he made the announcement on Monday.

However, there are reports indicating that Masina is now being investigated for sexual assault in two states: California (where he goes to school) and Utah (his hometown).

According to Kim Fischer of ABC4 in Salt Lake City, no charges have been filed against Masina, but that investigations involving sexual assaults in California and Utah are taking place. In fact, a search warrant has been issued for Masina in the Cottonwood Heights (Utah) case, as Chip Patterson of CBS Sports writes.

Officials at USC are aware of the Utah investigation and issued the following release (via CBSSports.com):

USC is aware of the investigation involving student-athlete Osa Masina. USC is cooperating fully with authorities in Utah, the lead agency in the investigation. Due to privacy laws and to protect the rights of our students, we are not able to discuss this matter further.

Masina, a 6’4”, 230-pound sophomore linebacker from Salt Lake City, Utah is coming off a freshman season in which he recorded 25 tackles, 17 of which were solo. He also had a fumble return for a touchdown.

USC is coming off solid yet tumultuous 2015 campaign. The Trojans went 8-6 overall and 6-3 in Pac-12 action, while coming in a tie for first place in the Pac-12 South Division. USC’s season ended with a loss to Wisconsin in the National Funding Holiday Bowl.
