According to multiple reports, Texas head basketball coach Shaka Smart announced Monday that sophomore guards Kerwin Roach Jr. and Tevin Mack have both been suspended for the Longhorns’ season opener against Incarnate Word on Friday.

Both players had previouslybeen suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Roach and Mack were initially suspended for the Longhorn’s exhibition game against Angelo State on Friday. Smart had said that they might be reinstated for the season opener, but he obviously doubled down on his punishment. He is clearly sending a message.

Mack, a 6’7”, 220-pound shooting guard from Columbia, South Carolina is coming off a decent freshman season in which he averaged 5.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He also shot a measly 29.0 percent from the field, 29.8 percent from three-point range and 64 percent from the free-throw line.

Roach, a 6’4”, 175-pound combo guard from Houston, Texas is coming off a fine freshman season in which he averaged 7.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He also shot 45.3 percent from the field, 32.8 percent from three-point range and 62.9 percent from the free-throw line. Roach was a candidate to start at point guard for Smart and the Longhorns this season.

If Mack and Roach serve their suspensions without issue, it is very likely that they will return for Texas’ game against Louisiana Monroe on Monday.

Texas enters the 2016-17 season ranked as the No. 21-ranked team in the Associated Press Top-25 and the 22nd-ranked team in the coaches poll.
