With the 2016 college football season creeping up on us, the naming of starting quarterbacks is becoming commonplace these days and Rutgers was one of the latest to name one.

On Monday, new Scarlet Knights’ coach Chris Ash named senior Chris Laviano his signal caller when the season starts, as reported by Keith Sargeant of NJ Advanced Media.

Laviano, who started 11 games last year, beat out TCU transfer Zach Allen for the right to be starter when Rutgers travels to Washington on September 3 to open the 2016 season.

More from Ryan Dunleavy of NJ Advanced Media:

“I think we, as quarterbacks, need to play better and eliminate the kind of mistakes that are high risk,” Laviano said after the first week of training camp.

“We’ll get better. We have these next two weeks to hopefully take advantage of them, but the quarterback competition will take care of itself.”

Laviano, a 6’2”, 221-pound signal caller from Glen Head, New York was Rutgers leading passer last season. He is coming off a junior campaign in which he threw for 2,247 yards and 16 touchdowns with 12 interceptions, while completing 60.9 percent of his passes.

For his career, Laviano has passed for 2,354 yards to go with 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Rutgers is coming off a trying and tumultuous 2015 season in which the Scarlet Knights went just 4-8 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten action, where they came in a tie for last place in the Big Ten East Division. Rutgers has struggled ever since moving to the Big Ten and the school is hoping Ash, who was a trusted aid of Urban Meyer at Ohio State, can be the man to turn around the program’s misfortunes.
