Tennessee Volunteers’ junior running back Jalen Hurd told teammates on Sunday evening that he plans to transfer, according to Jimmy Hyams. He told teammates that he expects to play either tight end or wide receiver at his new school while it is not yet known where Hurd will play after Tennessee.

He was allegedly upset with the way the team has used him in their zone-read offense this season.

After rushing for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2015, Hurd has taken a step back as a junior. He has only 451 yards on the season and is only averaging 3.7 yards per carry, a full yard less than he averaged his first two seasons with the Volunteers. He hasn’t topped 100 yards in a game since the season-opener against Appalachian State as his role has gradually decreased as the season has progressed.

In less than three seasons, Hurd has already made his way up to sixth all-time in program history for rushing yards. He is less than 500 yards away from Travis Henry’s record of 3,078 yards, but now appears unlike to surpass that with his current role and his intentions to not return to the school as a senior.

Additionally, defensive lineman Jonathan Kongbo sent out a vague tweet that seems to indicate that he is leaving the program as well, either in the form of retirement or a transfer:

If he does intend to transfer, it will be the third transfer of his collegiate career. He started at Wyoming and then went to Arizona Western College before transferring to Tennessee for the 2016 season.
