The Penn State Nittany Lions pulled off a shocking victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night when they shocked the No. 2 team in the country by beating them 24-21 in front of a white-out crowd in Happy Valley. The Buckeyes were previously 20-0 on the road in head coach Urban Meyer’s tenure at the helm. The victory for the unranked Nittany Lions was the first against a Top-2 team since 1964, when they knocked off the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes.

The play of the game came midway through the fourth quarter when the Buckeyes led by four points and settled for a field goal. But the decision on whether to kick or not came in late and the field goal unit had to rush on the field in order to avoid a delay of game penalty, never quite getting set. The field goal attempt would be blocked and scooped up Grant Haley for a 60-yard return for a touchdown that put Penn State up for good.

With the Nittany Lions only producing 276 yards of offense all night, it’s not hard to see why they trailed 21-7 entering the fourth quarter, with quarterback Trace McSorley going just 8-for-23 throwing the football for 154 yards with one touchdown. He rushed the ball 19 times for 63 yards and another score.

The loss for Ohio State does not immediately eliminate them from the College Football Playoff conversation, but it makes the remainder of the season–especially their Nov. 26 collision against Michigan–a must-win scenario.

The win for Penn State moves them just a win away from bowl eligibility and brings them to 5-2 on the season.
