Ole Miss and Texas Tech are very close to scheduling each other for Week 1 of the 2018 college football season, but there is one remaining obstacle. The Red Raiders must move their previously scheduled matchup against Missouri State to another season, according to Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

“I’m confident that we’ll be able to move the game that we need to be played and come to an agreement with ESPN on that game, so I’m excited about it,” Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said Monday. “The contract hasn’t been executed as of today, but I see no reason why it will not be in the coming weeks.”

Ole Miss has made it a point to start this year facing some difficult competition before the conference schedule opens. In Week 1 this fall, the Rebels will face the Florida State Seminoles, then in 2017, Ole Miss will visit California. In 2019, Ole Miss is set to play Memphis and California, but the rising SEC powerhouse doesn’t have a Power 5 opponent scheduled in 2018 yet.

Texas Tech is a great matchup for any SEC team to face because of what happened last September when the Red Raiders defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks. After the victory, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury told the media that Arkansas’ head coach Bret Bielema “just got his ass kicked,” which obviously started a rift between the two programs, and it continued as both coaches kept after each other through the media after that.

An Ole Miss-Texas Tech matchup could have a similar feel to it since Kingsbury appears to dislike the SEC.
