University of Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will take him through the 2022-2023 season, according to Roman Stubbs of The Washington Post. The renewed contract is worth around $2.5 million annually, per Stubbs.

Turgeon first joined Maryland ahead of the 2011-2012 season after spending five years at Texas A&M.

His tenure got off to a rocky start, however, as the Terrapins went 17-15  (6-10) during his first year as coach. The following year, Maryland ended up qualifying for the NIT and reached the semifinals. The Terrapins ended the season with a record of 25-13, but their 8-10 record in conference play kept them out of the NCAA Tournament.

Now, Turgeon’s Terrapins are coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

In 2015, the year Maryland moved from the ACC to the Big Ten, the school advanced to the second-round, but fell to West Virginia. Last season, Maryland enjoyed its best season under Turgeon yet, making it all the way to the Sweet 16 before succumbing to top-seeded Kansas in a 16-point loss.

The Terrapins are entering the 2o16-2017 season with a very inexperienced roster.

Four of their top-five scorers from last year have departed, with Melo Trimble representing the only holdover – Trimble led Maryland in scoring last season with 14.8 points per game. So, this is the latest challenge for Turgeon, who has resurrected a program that was dormant for several years.

The Terrapins will open up their season by hosting American University on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
