Georgia head basketball coach Mark Fox picked up a terrific recruit Thursday, when class of 2017 four-star power forward Rayshaun Hammonds offered up a verbal pledge to play for his home-state Bulldogs.

Hammonds went on an official visit to the school last week and he obviously liked what he saw on his trip. He is Fox’s first and only commitment in the 2017 recruiting class.

More on Hammonds’ decision to attend Georgia from The Telegraph‘s Brandon Sudge:

Georgia seemed to be in solid position to land Hammonds when significant interest was shown after he took his final official visit to Athens. After taking a trip to each of his final contenders, Hammonds saved his future destination for last and spoke highly of his time spent with Fox and staff.

“I had been up there so many times, but it was about the third visit when I knew that it was the place for me,” Hammonds said. “Mark Fox’s main pitch was academics, not even basketball. When he told me about academic prestige, it’s when it got serious.”

Hammonds, a 6’7”, 190-pound power forward from Norcross, Georgia (Norcross High School) is rated as a four-star recruit according to 247Sports. The site ranks him as the No. 50 overall prospect in the 2017 class and the 12th-best power forward in the country. 247Sports also regards Hammonds as the seventh-best basketball player in the state of Georgia.

He chose the Bulldogs over serious interest from Miami, Memphis, Texas, Connecticut and Alabama. Hammonds also had offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida International, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, LSU, Mississippi State, North Florida, Oklahoma State, Providence, Richmond, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Central Florida, VCU, Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky. He also had interest from California, Indiana State, Stanford and Tulane.
