Defending champ Alabama tops coaches preseason poll

Defending national champion Alabama and runner up Clemson are the top two teams in the USA Today/ Amway Coaches’ Preseason Poll announced Thursday.

The Crimson Tide, which defeated the Tigers 45-40 in last season’s College Football Playoff title game, received 55 of the 64 first-place votes. Clemson had seven first-place votes while Florida State and Tennessee each received the one first-place vote.

Oklahoma, which lost to Clemson in the CFP semifinals, was No. 3 in the preseason poll. Michigan State, which lost to the Tide in the other semifinal, is No. 11.

Alabama was one of six Southeastern Conference teams ranked. The conference breakdown was as follows: Pac-12, 5; Big Ten, 4; Big 12, 4; Atlantic Coast, 4, American, 1; Independent, 1.
