According to a report from Keith Niebuhr of 247Sports on Thursday, the Auburn Tigers have added a commitment from four-start running back Devan Barrett. A native of the state of Florida, Barrett currently attends Tampa Catholic High School and will be arriving at Auburn as part of the school’s class of 2017.
With the Tigers ultimately proving victorious in the Barrett sweepstakes, the up-and-coming running back chose Auburn over the Florida Gators, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Florida State Seminoles and Tennessee Volunteers.
Rated as the 17th-best running back in the country, Barrett has also become Auburn’s 13th recruit for the class of 2017. It is also worth mentioning that Auburn’s most recent recruiting class now features eight players with at least a four-star rating.
In addition, Thursday’s addition is third running back to commit to the Tigers for the class of 2017 alongside Octavius Matthews and Alaric Williams. Matthews previously committed in June and is a three-star running back while Williams is a four-star rusher that had been a longtime Auburn commit.
Last season, Barrett rushed for an impressive 1,891 yards and 21 touchdowns while receiving 187 carries for Tampa Catholic. Averaging 10.1 yards per carry as well, he rushed for at least 100 yards in 10 of 13 contests from a season ago. Notably, his best performance came during Tampa Catholic’s season-opener as Barrett rushed for a career-high 250 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries.
In 2015-2016, the Tigers finished the year with a nearly even 7-6 overall record alongside a disappointing mark of 2-6 in SEC play.
