While the recruiting cycle is winding down for many of the 2017 prospects around the country, the process is beginning to heat up for most of the top-rated underclassmen. Among them is Tampa (Fla.) Hillsborough four-star athlete Ken Montgomery, who is beginning to make his rounds and check out schools.

“I’m going on a flight to Arkansas (Thursday) for the weekend,” Montgomery told Today’s U. “I have a Top 15, that includes Arkansas, Tennessee, Oregon State, Maryland, a couple of them. I’m trying to plan a couple of visits to other schools. Ohio State has been trying to get at me for a week or two.”

The 6-foot-2, 165-pounder also named USC, Iowa, Virginia Tech and Louisville among the group of schools in his Top 15.

“They are good football programs,” Montgomery said. “I haven’t been to any schools like that yet so I can’t really say what I like about the campus, but I like their football teams and I have a great relationship with all of those head coaches and they are really trying to get me out there. They say they like me a lot, they try to stick with me throughout the recruiting process.”

Earlier this season, Montgomery visited South Florida to watch the Bulls take on Florida State, but so far that’s the only school he’s been to. Offers are still coming in for the four-star. In just the past month, he’s added offers from Central Florida, Penn State and Iowa.

Montgomery is also being recruited by Ohio State, Florida State, Miami and Florida and believes that more offers will be on their way. He’s especially hoping for an offer from the Buckeyes.

“(Defensive coordinator) Greg Schiano, he knows I really like them and he’s come to visit me a lot and he understands me as a person and I understand him as a person,” Montgomery told Today’s U.

The 247Sports four-star could play either side of the ball at the next level, but most schools like him as a defensive back.

“Most schools say they like my make-up speed and my tackling and stuff like that and how I can play both sides of the ball,” Montgomery said. “They know me as a mental guy, thinking first and a hard worker.”

With still more than a year to figure things out, Montgomery doesn’t yet have any timetable for a decision. However, once he begins to eliminate teams and narrow down his list, there are a few key things he will be looking for at each school.

“The most important is the academics and how I will be living, what type of city or community it is and all about the history of the team and all of that stuff,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery, who has 35 tackles and 10 pass deflections for Hillsborough so far this season, is focused on getting as good as he can over the next year and a half before he begins college.

“I want to improve everything,” Montgomery said. “There isn’t any certain spot I want to improve on, I just want to improve my game period.”
