The Maryland Terrapins received some good news on Sunday afternoon. 2017 four-star recruit Bruno Fernando verbally committed to the program. For context, this is actually the second different commitment he has made, but this one comes after reclassifying last year.
He made his announcement by way of Twitter.
“I am excited to announce that I’ll spend my next chapter of my life and continue my academics and basketball career at the University of Maryland,” Fernando tweeted.
A product of the famed IMG Academy, Fernando is 6’9″ combo forward/center. ESPN had him ranked as being the 71st best prospect of the 2016 class, but that was before he reclassified his eligibility to be a member of the 2017 class.
The big man had originally committed to play for SMU last year. He had averaged 10.8 point and seven rebounds per game at the Nike EYBL event before reclassifying.
As for how he looks for the 2017 class, Scout his him ranked just outside being one of the top-50 players in the class. The recruiting service website also has him tabbed as being the 13th best center in the entire class.
With the Terrapins going through a bit of a transition phase by the time Fernando will hit campus, Mark Turgeon can certainly use all the impact recruits he can manage. Considering Maryland’s 2016 class is already widely considered a top-15 in the nation type, landing the center for 2017 just helps with the program’s positive momentum.
Barring any unforeseen calamities or debaucheries, Fernando will be on campus and playing for Maryland in 2017.
