Class of 2017 three-star center Galin Smith committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday, via an announcement on his Twitter account. Smith becomes the third commit in head coach Avery Johnson’s 2017 recruiting group.

On the same day of his official visit to UAB, Smith announced that he would be attending school in Alabama, just in Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Tide. He took his official visit to the school back on Sep. 22. The 6’9″, 220-pound center out of Clinton HS in Clinton, Mississippi, was sought out after across the south, particularly in the SEC by LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Alabama.

Ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Mississippi, Smith trails only four-star point guard Nick Weatherspoon, who committed to play at Mississippi State. The addition of Smith is just desserts for the Crimson Tide on top of the announcement that four-star power forward Alex Reese would be heading to Tuscaloosa beginning in 2017 as well.

A 16-year NBA veteran point guard, Avery Johnson took the head coaching job for Alabama in April 2015. He went just 18-15 in his first season on campus, leading the Tide to the ride of the NIT before being knocked out. A decade earlier, Johnson was at the helm for the Dallas Mavericks, who lost in the 2006 NBA Finals to the Miami Heat.

The SEC has begun to catch up with the powerhouse Kentucky Wildcats and head coach John Calipari. The Texas A&M Aggies earned a share of the regular season crown last year, and the LSU Tigers were able to nab future No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons in recruiting.
